CRNA Guidelines for Nurse Injectors in Alberta: What They Mean for Medical Directorship

A Letter from Dr. Andrew Dargie
The debate surrounding medical directorship in Alberta recently heated up when a plastic surgeon took it upon himself to pay for ads to be circulated around the province highlighting CRNAs guidelines for neurotoxin administration. This same plastic surgeon directly emailed medical practices with nurse injectors specifically targeting their medical directors, without their consent.
I am uniquely qualified to speak on this matter, and I am happy to do so directly. This conduct would be subject to college discipline given the irrefutable conflict of interest and motivation behind promoting nursing college guidelines. The CPSA confirmed this with me last week. I also have a team of lawyers who work with my businesses closely who provided a comprehensive written opinion on this matter.
Now for those who don’t know me I am the founder of the botox course, Canada’s Gold Standard in aesthetics education. I have also trained more physicians and nurses than anyone in Canada over the last five years. Early in my career, I was asked to be a medical director for nurses looking to inject as solopreneurs. I specifically steered clear of this as I was junior in my career and would not be able to offer the support I thought would be necessary to oversee injections safely. Over the last couple of years, I have acted as a medical director for a small group of nurses that I have trained, built professional relationships with and supported on their aesthetics journey. Following this physicians scheme to disrupt the industry, I would like to share how our medical directorship program is hands down, the best in the country supporting independent nurses who want to do things the right way.
First and foremost, we offer real time, patient specific orders prior to patient treatments so that our nurses can be compliant and deliver the highest standard of care. We were the first company in the country to offer the RAACE program which is the Rapid Access to Aesthetics Consultative Experts. I presented this program at the St. Paul’s ER conference in BC when I was lecturing on aesthetic emergencies. Every nurse I work with has my direct cell phone, my lead nurse injectors cell phone, and both of my assistant’s phone numbers should they ever want to discuss a case after hours. Our medical directees don’t purchase resale product from me at a marked-up price point as most medical directors do – as it is illegal to resell class 1 medications. Those same medical directors benefit from the credit card points, training opportunities and industry kickbacks that the injectors using the product should benefit from. Furthermore, we offer monthly teaching webinars, complimentary access to my online digital lifetime academy for advanced online training, hands on training and offer alumni events.
Most importantly, you work with an industry leading physician in your field who is highly engaged and motivated to mentor you along the way. One with a history of success and grounded in a field where superficiality often rules. If you are curious - just ask our current medical directees – or see our testimonials online.
Our flat fee doesn’t change as your practice grows, thus you keep your hard earned revenue. So if you want to legitimize your practice, get better at what you do, and check all the boxes for safety, efficiency and enjoy the world of aesthetics; our medical directorship quality is unparalleled.
As I said to my small group of nurse injectors – these CRNA guidelines are excellent. These should be celebrated for establishing clarity in a space that certainly lacks it. For those practicing outside college guidelines, it can serve as a wake up call. And for those greedy folks looking to interfere with other people’s livelihoods for selfish reasons – shame on you. If you were truly doing it for patient concern, safety issues and with positive intent – ok I see you. But as I say to everyone I mentor, I recommend focusing on what you do, tuning out the noise and getting ahead based on kindness, effort, talent and results.
